Michel Pelletier, de La Prade

C.P. 10090, Succ Sainte-Foy, Québec (Québec) G1V 4C6   Canada

Little is known about this character that was Michel Pelletier, sieur de La Prade and this is why over the course of conversations he became the mysterious “sieur de La Prade”. From his European origin, we can say that he was probably born in Paris. In the censuses taken in New France, he indicates that he was 35 years old in that of 1666, and 36 years old in that of 1667 in Trois-Rivières. In the 1681 census, he declared himself to be 51 years old and he was located at the Seigneurie de La Prade, or Gentilly.

Michel Pelletier, a bourgeois merchant, acquired the Seigneurie of Gentilly in two stages. Firstly, he acquired a first space from Félix Thunay on April 18, 1669. Then, on October 23, 1671, by deed of sale concluded with Nicolas Marsolet, he acquired the remainder of his seigneurie.

It was with Jacqueline Chamboy that he entered into marriage, the place and date of which remain unknown to this day. Jacqueline was the widow of Jean Poisson. No known descendants are from this union. She died and was buried on November 1, 1694, in Quebec.
